Union

Understanding · Finishing · Showing

Solar Arc · Summer (Midsummer)

Core Function

Union is the choice to call the work whole and show it.

At phase nine, all the separate decisions, compromises and consequences have to become one thing. This isn't primarily union between people. It is the work of bringing the parts together so that the whole can finally be seen.

Finishing is not the same as making everything perfect. There is always another detail, another improvement, another path you could have taken. Union asks what belongs in the whole, what can be left out and whether you are willing to say: this is what we made.

Natural Pattern

The teaching has not fixed Union to one plant or weather image. Its clearest pattern is found in making: finishing a work of art, wrapping months of work or holding up the lantern so others can see the landscape you have created.

The whole is coherent, not complete in every possible sense. Finishing remains a choice.

Mirror Pair

Union and Solitude are the two expressions of phase nine. Both look back and ask what the journey meant.

Union gathers the work into a form that can be presented. Solitude faces the judgement that follows and asks what it means when no external verdict can settle the question. One makes the whole visible. The other finds its meaning within.

Progression

Union becomes Light when the finished whole leaves your hands. You may understand the path you took, but you cannot control what happens next or how anyone else will see it.

The Hermit raises the lantern and shows the landscape. The Wheel then turns through all the other paths, accidents and consequences that no account can contain.

When It Gets Stuck

Union gets stuck when finishing is postponed until every loose end is tied up. There is always more that could be done, so the work remains private and the whole is never shown. Understanding becomes an endless search for one final answer.

What are you still improving because you are afraid to call it finished?

Questions

  • What was this all for?
  • What is enough?
  • What do you need to leave out so the whole can be seen?

Traditional Tarot

The Hermit looks back over the path and asks what it meant. His lantern can light his own way, but it can also show others what he has learnt. In this reading, solitude is not the destination. The work of the card is to gather hard-won understanding and make it visible.
