Stillness

Integration · Acceptance · Joy

Lunar Arc · Winter (Imbolc)

Core Function

Stillness is the power that comes from being able to sit with yourself.

Night stripped away external support and forced an encounter with fear, doubt and the parts of yourself you would rather avoid. Stillness is what may emerge when those parts no longer have to be fought or hidden. The mind becomes quiet enough for the self to act as one.

This is not innocence and it is not passive peace. The joy of the Sun has survived consequences.

Natural Pattern

At Imbolc, in the Northern seasonal tradition behind this deck, light begins to press outward while winter remains cold. The change can be easy to miss. The sun is not yet the obvious heat of summer; it is an inner pressure towards life despite the emptiness around it.

Your own seasons may show this differently. Look for power that is present before it becomes display.

Mirror Pair

Heat and Stillness are the outward and inward expressions of phase eight. Heat aligns different wills in relationship. Stillness aligns the self by accepting the polarity it contains.

Strength guides without domination. The Sun shines without asking permission. Both combine force and gentleness; neither needs to destroy difference to become integrated.

Progression

Stillness becomes Solitude when inner freedom has to answer a harder question: what does this life, work or journey mean? Being at ease with yourself is not the final judgement.

Solitude takes the self that has emerged and asks it to decide what matters when no outside authority can settle the answer.

When It Gets Stuck

The teaching on the reversed Sun has changed. “Too much Sun”—the glare, drought and sunburn—remains part of it. The sharper reading is becoming too lost in your own world: protecting the identity you found until self-possession replaces integration. Stillness then resists Solitude because it will not ask what that identity is for.

Where has being true to yourself become an excuse not to meet anything outside yourself?

Questions

  • What can you now accept without having to defeat it?
  • Where does your joy have real power?
  • Can you sit in silence with the person you have become?

Traditional Tarot

The RWS Sun is often reduced to fun and happiness. Here, the naked child represents something harder won: a self no longer organised around shame or other people's expectations. The sunflower replaces Strength's roses. Conscious control gives way to spirit expressed directly.
