Preparation
Pattern · Practice · Restraint
Lunar Arc · Autumn/Winter threshold
Core Function
Preparation is knowing enough to do less.
Within the deck's sequence, Death has changed the person who emerges. Preparation can now see connections that were hidden before. This is not the Magician's first success. It is the ease that comes after doing something repeatedly, making mistakes and allowing the pattern to become part of you.
There is power here: the ability to combine, adjust and intervene. There is also restraint. No show. No excess. The smallest change may be enough.
Natural Pattern
The teaching has not yet settled on one seasonal image for Preparation. Its position at the edge of Autumn and Winter suggests a shift from living inside events to recognising their pattern. Local signs will differ. Look for the moment when experience changes the way you prepare: less frantic effort, better timing, fewer wasted moves.
Mirror Pair
Sprout and Preparation are the two sides of a woven carpet. The Empress is the visible pattern, embedded in growth and learning through contact. Temperance sees the reverse: the threads that join the parts and the small movement that changes the design.
Sprout tries and discovers. Preparation remembers and adjusts.
Progression
Preparation becomes Reflection when skill is no longer the only question. Being able to act does not tell you what your power is for, which rules you accept or what you have hidden to remain inside them.
Temperance can work with the pattern. The Devil asks who is doing the work—and what they really want.
When It Gets Stuck
The teaching has not established a settled reversal for Preparation. One provisional reading follows its movement into Reflection: skill becomes a hiding place. You keep making precise adjustments because competence is safer than asking what the work serves or what your power might cost.
Where are you using competence to avoid asking what you want?
Questions
- What can you do now because you have practised it?
- Where would a smaller intervention be more effective?
- What does your skill allow you to notice that a beginner cannot yet see?
Traditional Tarot
Temperance pours between two vessels. In this reading the flow is dynamic equilibrium, not a moral instruction to be moderate. The angel can mix what looked incompatible because the pattern has become familiar. The ease is earned through experience, not granted by purity.
