Seed

Boundary · Initiation · Choice

Solar Arc · Spring Equinox

Core Function

Seed is the choice that turns everything possible into one actual beginning.

Before the choice, many things could happen. Then you draw a boundary: this idea, this promise, this attempt. The boundary creates an inside and an outside at the same time. Something can now begin because you have accepted that it cannot be everything.

There is a useful gap between Seed and the Magician. A seed does not make a conscious choice. The Magician does. He takes possibility and declares, “This one.”

Natural Pattern

A seed has a skin. That small boundary holds one particular pattern of life, but not everything the plant will need. Once growth begins it meets soil, water, weather, damage and luck. The boundary makes the beginning possible. It does not control what follows.

Mirror Pair

Seed and Harvest are both phase-one cards: both draw a boundary. Seed projects an inner choice into the world. Harvest meets the point where the world answers back and your will is no longer in charge.

The beginning already defines what might count as a harvest. It also excludes other possibilities. No choice gets around that.

Progression

Seed becomes Root when the clean idea meets complicated reality. The Magician can choose, declare and act. Then the ground pushes back. Root asks what supports the choice, what resists it, and what the first confident plan failed to notice.

When It Gets Stuck

Seed gets stuck when will mistakes itself for the whole world. The first move worked, so you assume wanting and doing will always be enough. You demand a quick answer, dismiss the awkward detail, and refuse the descent into Root.

Where are you demanding a simple answer from a complicated world?

Questions

  • What are you choosing?
  • What does that choice place outside the boundary?
  • What have you begun without yet understanding the ground beneath it?

Traditional Tarot

The Magician has the tools in front of him and the will to use them. He separates the many possibilities into one act. That directness can look like magic, particularly the first time it works. The card also carries the danger of analysis without depth: naming the parts and believing that means you understand the whole.
